Pazyrk rug preserved perfectly up to this day because it was frozen. The rug was found as an ice ball. It was in okay condition and still flexible when it was thawed, other than a couple of the ripped zone and a missing spot. After the rug came to the surface, it was washed with special technics, dried, and sprayed with a unique mixture that contained alcohol, gelatin, and glycerin. Pazyrk rug exhibited in St. Petersburg Hermitage Museum since 1950.
First documented proof for rug’s existence date back to Sasanians, who lived in Iran at 224-641 A.D. Heraclius brought a large variety of rugs to the capital of Sasanians after Ctesiphon was concerned. They include a famous rug named “Springtime of Khosrow.” This favorite 27 square meter rug put its stamp on history as the most precious rug. Nevertheless, Arabs tore this precious rug apart and sold every piece of them individually.
Art of Persian rug reached a peak in 16th century with Safavids Nearly 1500 quintessence of this era maintains at special collections of several museums all over the world. At the end of the 19th century, some companies from Europe and America came to set up factories and started rug producing for the western markets. In the present, the rug looming is the most extensive handcraft in Iran.
